How license plate recognition gets you through the gate in two seconds
No stickers, RFID tags or apps. A look at the camera system behind our member lanes, and what we do with the data.

When we opened Ballard in 2016, members got a windshield sticker with an RFID chip. It worked most of the time. Then people got new windshields, swapped cars, or peeled the sticker off by accident, and our support line filled up with gate problems. In 2021 we moved every location to license plate recognition, and gate issues dropped by 91 percent.
Here is how the system works, why it is faster, and what happens to the data it collects.
Step one: your plate joins your account
When you sign up, you enter your plate number and state. That is the only identifier the system needs. Each plate on an account is tied to a plan level, so a household with a Ceramic car and a Rinse car gets the right wash for each without anyone pressing a button.
Step two: the camera reads the plate
Each member lane has an infrared camera mounted about eight feet from the gate. Infrared matters in Seattle, because it reads plates reliably in rain, fog and at night when visible light cameras struggle. The camera captures several frames as you approach, and software picks the clearest read.
- Works with front or rear plates
- Handles dirty plates, plate frames and most temporary tags
- Reads at walking speed, so there is no need to stop and wait
Step three: a match in under a second
The plate text is checked against active memberships stored at the site, with a backup sync to our central system. If the membership is active, the gate opens and the tunnel controller loads your plan. The whole sequence usually takes about two seconds from the moment your bumper crosses the line.
The best technology at a car wash is the kind you never notice. You pull up, the gate opens, you get washed.
What if the plate does not read?
About one car in two hundred does not get an automatic read, usually because of a bent plate, heavy mud or a bike rack blocking the view. A lane attendant sees the exception on a tablet and can look you up by phone number in a few seconds. You never have to back out of the lane.
What we do and do not do with plate data
We know plate cameras raise fair privacy questions, so here is our policy in plain language. We store plate numbers only for vehicles on active memberships and fleet accounts. Each visit logs the plate, site and time, which lets us show your wash history and prevent plan sharing. Images from non-member vehicles are discarded within 24 hours.
- We never sell or share plate data with advertisers or data brokers
- We only release records when legally required, such as a valid court order
- Visit logs are deleted 18 months after a membership ends
Changing cars is easy
Bought a new car or got new plates? Update the plate in your account and it is active immediately. You can swap the vehicle on a membership up to twice a year for free, and our support team can help with anything unusual, like dealer plates or a rental while your car is in the shop.
It is a small piece of technology, but it is a big part of why joining Spectra feels simple. No tag to forget, no app to open, just pull up and wash.
